I had some passion over photography, although I do not call my self an Amateur or Professional, but it certainly get me to do something special once a while.

Portrait Big Thumb

A few weeks back I did a photo shooting session to obtain some portrait shots of my self, useful for many purpose.

I am doing this under fully DIY and improvised style, alone. I do not have the right stands, tripod, Reflector, lighting equipment, camera, even appropraite chair. The only good thing that I had is a 8′x8′ wall painted with bright orange.

This is my first time attempting it after reading much of the lighting tutorial from the Internet. The key goal of this session is to understand the lighting placement and effect.

In my house I had alot of florecent lamp tube, I took 3 of those and intended to position it into 3 point lighting configuration, but unfortunately I can’t figure out a way to position the backlight. I move along without the backlight and took over 500 shots, experimenting the positioning of the key and fill light.

As for the review:

  • The background appeared to be too bright, it fails to feature the subject out very well.
  • Orange color as the background seems to merge the subject skin color tone, making it uninteresting.
  • My camera Fuji Finepix E550 does not give me sufficient control range of DOF, I just unsatisfied with the result.
  • The light altitude are too low, resulting the subject seems to be unnatural.
  • Backlight is very important to feature the hair and shoulder of the subject from the background which I am did not able to achieve it this time.
  • Subject makeup, I believe the subject “Me” would looks better if I had ever place some effort to control the tone and the weight of facial elements such as eyebrows.

So dear reader, I am not an expert, I do not know many details, but do me a favor and I need your help, please comment to me how can I improve the shots, which area should pay more attention into. And thank you very much!
